Baltic Gallery

May 2nd, 2008

As part of my research I have been looking at museum and gallery websites. One of my favourites to date is the Baltic Gallery in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

This site succeeds on a myriad of levels delivering a huge wealth of visual material, information on exhibits, past, present and future, learning resources, press releases and a vast archive of material relating to the various artists, including related books, images, articles, podcasts, video and audio information available to download.

It is interesting to note that last year the Baltic Gallery removed a controversial photograph from American photographer Nan Goldin’s exhibition which eventually forced the closure of the exhibition. This is an example rightly or wrongly of the Gallery’s impact an the integrity of content. The content of the website is also controlled exclusively by Baltic management.

Can the success of this site be attributed to its structure as a repository, rather than an open information web environment?
